As a Yoruba girl from Nigeria, in West Africa, it is paramount that my style shows my background. I know some of our design prints can be super colourful. I have been able to style my clothes with a blend that you would almost think I am wearing ready-made imported clothes, if I didn't tell you I sewed it.

Wearing African-inspired or themed cloth to work is essential to me, as it helps me retain my identity. I feel more confident in my African clothes at work. When I was in a corporate role, I wore African prints at least once a week in person (I was in the office 3 days a week), maybe more, as they were my go-to outfits for WFH days.

When I first started sewing dresses for myself, I frowned at the idea of blending fabrics and patterns. However, I soon learnt there is beauty in combining different textures and colours. ‘No fabric is an island, they need each other’ 😁 *tailor's dad joke*.

Wearing an African-inspired cloth to work is a way for me to share my culture, albeit unspoken, with my colleagues. Maybe even more, during our lunch breaks, as we discussed my style and simple sewing patterns. Some of them wanted to know what the African fabrics meant. We would also talk about the possibility of them getting into trouble if they wore similar outfits, and that they would, curiously yet genuinely, ask whether it was offensive for them to buy and wear African prints.

Wearing cultural pieces definitely makes you chatty with your colleagues. Tomorrow is Friday, you might want to dig into your closet if you are physically going to be at work and wear something that reminds you of home. Fridays are not only for jeans 😉.

For some of us, sharing online is a great way to keep us in check and accountable, for some others, it is not. For me, it works both ways. Like the time I went offline on my personal pages, mid 2025, I needed to not run back when I got bored, so I shared it online, and by God’s Grace, I am still off my personal IG, FB and TT.

I would be back on my business socials to share what I have been up to, get feedback, tweak as we grow, learn and unlearn.

I write this in reference to New Year's Resolutions…

When I was younger, in my early twenties, I didn’t miss an opportunity to write New Year’s Resolutions. I would sometimes hint online at what I wanted to do, or write in a journal or something.

However, as I approached my late twenties, I realised I was doing it for showmanship, and I was not really doing the work.

Like some other areas of my life, for the longest time, I talked about doing, but I was not really doing.

I have reflected a lot with my time off social media, and I am glad for people who truly care, who held my hands and lovingly shared places I was slacking in. The areas and places I needed to improve on.

I am most grateful for the person of the Holy Spirit, who has counselled me, advocated for me, and helped me in more ways than one.

As we start the new year, I think we should sit with ourselves and actually do what has worked and stop what is not working.

If you think having resolutions works for you, do it; if you think sharing online helps you stay accountable, so be it. If you enjoy and love writing vision boards, join me.

a different fabric, a softer hue —

we were running late,

the kind of rush that makes patience

feel like a luxury.

He pulled the dress up too quickly,

a careless tug, a quiet rip,

and just like that, something lovely was ruined.

No “sorry,”

just silence wrapped in blame.

He said it was my fault:

because I took too long,

because time was slipping,

because I should’ve known better.

But I did know better:

to care for what I wear,

to move with grace,

to show up even when everything feels undone.

Then he said the words

that cut deeper than the tear,

that the dress doesn’t fit me anymore,

that I’m forcing myself into it,

as if I should shrink

to make comfort for his eyes.

The fabric wasn’t the only thing stretched thin: It was my patience, my softness,

my belief that love always means kindness.

His tone was sharp and careless,

a mirror held up to what he couldn’t understand,

that this body has carried storms and sunrises,

children and change, grief and growth.

It wasn’t just about the dress.

It was about gentleness,

and how often women have to ask for it,

even from the ones who claim to love them.

I wanted to tell him,

this isn’t a dress that doesn’t fit,

it’s a woman who’s evolved.

The seams are just learning

to hold all she has become.

So I said nothing.

Not because it didn’t hurt,

but because I’ve learned,

some apologies never come,

and some lessons don’t need to be taught twice.

I may have outgrown the dress,

but not my worth.

And if he can’t see the woman

standing in front of him: stronger, wiser,

stitched together by endurance,

then maybe he’s the one who no longer fits…

However, within moments, everything changed. Instead of sharing his joy, one of his friends teased him. The shift was immediate, his once bright smile faded, his shoulders slumped, and his excitement drained away like air escaping from a balloon. His entire demeanour darkened in an instant. Frustrated and visibly upset, he rushed to his mother, his voice laced with disappointment as he exclaimed, "I told you this was not cool!" His frustration grew so intense that even the play place’s patron had to step in to console him.

As I watched the scene unfold, I couldn't help but reflect on how often we, too, experience moments like this in our own lives. How often have we stepped into a space, excited about something that makes us feel good, only for someone's words or reactions to shake our confidence? How often do we allow the opinions of others to dull our light and make us question the beauty we once saw in ourselves?

It was a simple, fleeting moment, but it held a profound lesson. How we perceive ourselves should not be dictated by how others see us. True confidence comes from within, and learning to hold onto that despite the world's noise may be one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

As we approached church, a thought popped into my head: It is easy to go to church on a bright Sunday morning, but how about on a cold, gloomy Sunday morning?

The church was not full, and I assume it was because it was a cold Sunday.

Then my thoughts got deeper and expanded further into other areas of life: What happens when what you are used to doesn't happen? Does your life stop? Do you continue on your journey and pursue your why?

Most of us have always known and done things in certain ways. We never take risks, and we stick to what works. I mean, if it works, why change it, why fix it, and why think of possible problems?

Why problem-solve what is not broken? I want you to think of your contingency plan in case of risks. Think of external risks, like today's change in weather, which is not within your control. Would you sleep in on Sunday morning when you should be preparing for church? Would you manage uncertainties effectively when they arise, or would you be caught off guard and miss church?

Today, it is church; tomorrow, it could be work; the day after next, it could be a client meeting. 

What would you miss when the weather changes, or would you change your timing and outfit to suit the weather

In addition to avoiding live news broadcasts, I also stopped reading news blogs, as they often left me feeling drained and deeply saddened. Instead, I rely on my close-knit network to keep me informed about critical events. However, this approach does have its limitations. When Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred was making headlines, my mother knew about it before I did. The warnings issued for South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales were meant to help residents prepare, yet due to my intentional distance from the news, I did not catch up on time. Fortunately, we remained safe and did not experience any shortages of essential supplies.

More recently, I took an intentional step toward further protecting my mental space by undertaking a social media detox. In early March, I deleted my Facebook and Instagram apps to reduce exposure to distressing content and regain a sense of peace. This decision has been incredibly refreshing, allowing me to reclaim my emotional energy and focus on what truly nourishes my soul. While it is impossible to completely avoid news and global events, I still come across snippets on YouTube, and I have been intentional about shifting my response. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I have leaned into prayer and worship.

During this period, I have spent more time in prayer, interceding for those affected by crises, natural disasters, and instability. My prayers have focused on protection, peace, and provision for my family, my community, and those in need across the world.

Recognising the profound impact of prayer on my emotional well-being, I recently launched a new initiative: Peaceful Prayers on YouTube. This space is dedicated to short but powerful prayers designed to provide comfort, calm, encouragement, and spiritual strength to those struggling with anxiety, fear, uncertainty, emotional distress or being overwhelmed. I know firsthand how much I need these prayers, and I hope they serve as a source of strength for you as well. If you are healing right, you will develop more empathy for others and might even teach others what you are learning along the way. Sometimes, it may feel like you are diagnosing other people around you, recognizing patterns in their behaviour that mirror your own experiences.

You become more confident talking about mental health. It no longer feels like a strange illness, and you stop stigmatizing others on their journey or as they heal. Healing fosters greater love for God and others.

The Bible offers relatable examples of individuals who faced mental health struggles, showing that these challenges are part of the human condition. Consider Martha, who experienced anxiety in Luke 10:38-42. She was overly concerned with ensuring everything was perfect when hosting Jesus. Yet, all she truly needed was to sit at His feet. This resonates with those of us who strive for perfection, often at the cost of missing the beauty of the present moment. The preparation never ends; sometimes, it's better to enjoy the time with our visitors.

Elijah’s story reflects the depths of depression. After leading the Israelites back to God by proving the futility of Baal worship, he faced Jezebel’s wrath. Threatened with death, he fled to the wilderness, overwhelmed by exhaustion and loneliness. He even begged God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4). Today, this could be likened to suicidal thoughts and depression, issues that mental health professionals recognize and treat.

Cain’s story highlights anger management struggles. His unchecked anger led to the murder of his brother Abel (Genesis 4:8). Anger itself is not a sin—as noted in Ephesians 4:26—but how we manage it makes all the difference. In today's world, Cain might face legal consequences, but the root issue of anger is universal. Anger can hurt others, make us sad, and instil fear in those around us. Addressing anger healthily is critical.

Naomi’s grief after losing her husband and sons shows the isolating nature of sorrow (Ruth 1:20-21). She even urged her daughters-in-law to leave her. Yet Ruth stayed, offering care and support when Naomi needed it most. Grief often pushes us into isolation, but it’s precisely when we need connection and support. If you’ve suffered any kind of grief, find listening ears to share your pain, and be a shoulder for others in their times of need.

Even Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, struggled with addiction. His obsession with women led him to marry 700 wives and take 300 concubines. These relationships distracted him and eventually led him away from God, as he was influenced to worship false gods (1 Kings 11:3-4). Solomon’s unchecked desires mirror modern addictions. Whether it’s substances, habits, or behaviours, addiction is a mental health issue that requires attention and healing.

As you reflect on these stories, remember that mental health struggles are not unique to our time. They’ve been part of human history, and the Bible offers solace and lessons for those navigating their journey. Healing is a process that involves empathy, connection, and, above all, grace—for ourselves and others.

What is work?

According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, work is
: to perform or carry through a task requiring sustained effort or continuous repeated operations

Work is not something you start and then stop; it is constant.

What is Faith?

According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, faith is believed, especially with strong conviction.

The Holy Book in Hebrews 11:1 says faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

What is Without work, faith is dead?

The Holy Book says in James 2:26 Faith without works is dead. Which means. Faith alone cannot make you successful. You need work and not just one-time work but continuous work.

I know people from some churches in my home country Nigeria are fasting and engaging in many spiritual and Faith-filled activities, but that alone won't yield success; you need to throw work into the equation to get results.

The Holy Book says in Proverbs 22:29 Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.

The good book didn't say Do you see a prayerful man standing before kings?

Regardless, faith helps you do your physical work well, gives you direction, positions you, and lets you know strategic places to be.

Conclusion

So I urge you today that as you are fasting from food, social media, sex, etc., to also work physically and mentally to get the result you want as in James 2:18, which says, "You have faith, and I have worked". Please show me your faith without works. And I will show you my faith through my creations.

Although faith without works is dead, work without faith is not as great and fulfilling as work with faith.

When you work and have faith, it hits differently. Having confidence in God makes your work seamless and hassle-free.

I hope you work as well as faith for the rest of the year.

Rotimi's official YALI passport

I have applied to the Regional Leadership Centre (RLC) twice before now and to the Mandela Washington Fellowship of the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI). I was certain I was done applying after my second RLC application because I made it to the interview, but I didn't get past that. I was tired of writing applications and sending them out to friends and colleagues to proofread, and what have you.

I kept seeing the application for this cohort I got into, but I  didn't want to apply. Then, one beautiful day, Adaeze, my sweet friend from secondary school, sent me the application, but I still ignored it.

Well, after a few days, I reluctantly applied again. This time, I made the interviews again, but not just that I got in, as I made it to the grand finale.

Well, after I got in, I took part in an intensive two-week online training and testing before joining 128 other Africans from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote D'Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Nigeria. My first day was quite hectic, from packing, unpacking, and getting accustomed to the weather in Topo, Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria.


By the second day, a few participants knew my name, and it was fun pronouncing other people's names and trying to learn a line or two from their native language. It was great interacting and networking, putting faces to the names from the online platform and the WhatsApp group.


The third day was Monday, which was for proper work. We had the honour of meeting Mr Kappo, A.K.A. Action Man. He made us laugh as much as he made us do our work. He came in with a stern look and left smiling like we were, too.


The fourth, fifth, sixth, and up until the twenty-first day went by so fast. The days went by so fast that I can assure you that we wished it was the first day. I sometimes thought I was in space.

I met incredible, talented, determined, courageous, charismatic, empathetic go-getters, to name a few, from all walks of life, from different states, regions, and countries of West Africa. It was amazing how everyone left their differences and embraced a common goal to become an African leader. The sentiments were all gone. There was no fight over Nigerian Jollof or Ghanaian Jollof, even though the Gambians say they own Jollof. It was very peaceful and a great bonding experience for us all.


Sharing my fun experience from RLC would not be enough, so I will share my learning experience briefly.  One of the profound things I have in my head right now is the importance of unity, never giving up, and never assuming anyone is useless. I have also learnt not to react to situations; rather, I should act; these were some lessons from some video clips we watched on the first workday.

Dr Uwem Akangsom taught us about Leadership and Accountability, which was awesome. As you would have guessed, the take away from his lesson are countless, but I will drop these few: no leader can do it all alone; leverage on each other's strength; there's strength in numbers. As a leader, you must teach and coach and should never feel frustrated because your followers don't have the skills you have. Update yourself on academics or whatever it is, as knowledge and skills learned become obsolete after 5 years, so never stop learning. Learn as much as you can; you never know when that knowledge will come in handy. Never stroll onto the big stage. Always prepare for it because it will surely come.

We had another course on Ethical Leadership by Dr Haruna Abdul; the highlights were
1. In leadership, morality is magnified
2. If you know it is not ethical, then don't do it.
3. Leaders have a set of core values they publicly commit to and live by always.
4. Leaders are role models in terms of both words and actions
5. Ethical leaders have respect for and serve others; they are just and honest and help build the community.


For the Business and Entrepreneurship track I signed up for, we had two amazing lecturers, Dr Pascal Brenya and Dr Olayiwola Oladapo. They ensured we knew the why, how and what of our businesses. This helped us as a team and as individuals to understand what we were offering, how we were doing what we were doing and most importantly, why we were in business. We realised what stage of the entrepreneurship development process we were in. Things we should do before we launch our product, the assessments to be done, and so much more. It was awesome, I must say. I liked the interlude during classes, playing games to test our focus, and sometimes we danced. I will do the Business and Entrepreneurship track again with these instructors if I can.


We had groups for our poster presentation, which focused on issues and solutions affecting Africa. Then, we were grouped in teams for our tracks for presentation/pitching. We also had another team for simulation, which was based on unemployment in the countries represented. I was a Cameroonian for a day or two.

It was awesome how I had different group members across the board. I was not in the same group as someone else; a different group/team meant a different face. My business and entrepreneurship track came third for the pitching.

After all is said and done, I, Oluwarotimi, have decided to improve my life in Nigeria, Africa, and eventually the world.

Now the onus is on you to what you would do better henceforth.

However, once things don’t work out as envisioned or as perfectly staged on the internet, they give up and go their separate ways. The truth is, human beings are intricate. God, who created us, understands this deeply. That’s why in the Lord’s Prayer we are reminded: “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

We fail ourselves so often, yet God still shows us grace. In the same way, we must learn to extend that grace to our friends, families, and loved ones.

Social media only shows the highlight reel of life, never the whole picture. If we use those polished images as the yardstick for our everyday relationships, we will always come up short.

Instead, we should ground our connections in patience, forgiveness, and genuine understanding, rather than in illusions of perfection.

Relationships, hmmm… don’t be deceived. Everyone seems to have a “couple goal” these days, but even your couple goal has a couple goal. Sister girl and brother man, nobody shows you what they have to deal with behind the scenes or how much they’ve had to let go of just to keep moving forward. You don’t know how many times they forgive each other in a single day.

No one tells you they had a heated argument just minutes before sending that lovely reel. That screenshot you just munched, the one you secretly hope you and bae can be someday. Girl, nobody is going to tell you how much they sacrifice to stay together when the world feels like it’s crumbling at their feet. That’s the hidden part of love you don’t see online.

So, please, stop dreaming about Mr. and Mrs. XYZ and start building your own dream home from ABC. Real love isn’t built on perfect pictures or flawless moments. It’s built on grace, patience, and forgiveness. The strength of any relationship is not in how beautiful it looks to the outside world, but in how much mercy and understanding is exchanged in private

This also applies at work; it’s easy to look at our friends, classmates, or colleagues and expect our jobs to be as ‘cool’ or enjoyable as theirs appear on social media.

What we often forget is that what we see online is only a glimpse, a snippet, a highlight reel of their workplace and colleagues, not the full picture. Comparing our journey to theirs robs us of contentment and blinds us to the value in our own path.

We all have different callings and seasons in life, so it’s important to own yours and walk diligently in it. When you focus on your work rather than comparing it to others, you position yourself to grow, gain mastery, and receive the rewards that come with persistence. True success doesn’t come from chasing another person’s story, but from faithfully stewarding your own.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9

And family? Girl, we all have responsibilities. Don’t think your family has any twists and turns, man up and stop complaining. No, we don’t talk to every uncle, auntie, cousin, or relative all the time. What you see on social media is just the rose; no one shows you the thorn. You see the beautiful pictures and perfectly edited videos and wish for it, but if only you saw the ashes, you’d understand. Run your race, build your foundation, and leave social media to do its thing. It’s a highlight reel - not real life.

I have done this countless times. I usually prefer typing to talking, so I write to them telling them they came to mind, and I thought to check in; my buddies might have received a message like this a little too many times from me.

If I prayed for them, which I often do, I would also tell them I have done so.

That’s what I have done and still do.

From now on - I would like to reach out warmly and not say they came to mind as it gives up a creepy vibe in today’s world where most folks are busy minding the business that pays them.

I would tell you what you could do - Buzz them if you can - Actually, scratch that; your first call is to pray for them. If you still feel strongly about reaching out, please message to check in and pray for them.

I sincerely feel praying for someone is an awesome first call, as it is to God the Omnipotent and Omnipresent. You don’t have to know the details of anyone's life to pray for them - simply say to God, “Miss A or Mr B came to mind; you know them, I pray you guide them in all they do, I commit them to your hands, I also pray for Mercy for them” In Jesus Name Amen.

I understand the importance of the prayer of Mercy - there’s never too much of God’s mercy. We all need God’s avalanche of Mercy at all points in our lives.

If you reach out - don’t come out strong; show genuine care, have empathy, and let your words be seasoned with love. For instance, don’t say “you’ve been absent” or things along that line that give off the wrong vibe.

Rather, say “hello; you came to mind, and I prayed for you” - Shikena.

Don’t quiz them - it comes out nosey - no one likes people’s noses up in their business, especially when you are not close pals or tight buddies.

Do you know what’s even super special? Pray for them - don’t tell them you’ve done so. I am also learning this - doing spiritual things without sharing with the direct recipient is so wholesome - after all, our prayers should be between us and God. 

Let God do the work. If something is up and God wants the reaching out to happen, God would make your paths cross in a natural form - not one that seems forced or ingenuine.

Don’t be in people’s business excessively - especially when they are unfamiliar - it could make them run to their shell and be there a long time.

Thanks to people who prayed for me and sent warm messages. You all know yourselves.  

I am good. I had a quiet start to the year as God told me to be calm this period so I am not “cold” or “lax”. I am simply listening.

To anyone who writes and speaks, you’ll know and cherish the importance of refilling and reflecting by reading and listening.
